Sunday in the Park with George

Kennedy Theatre, Honolulu Hawaii

'Sunday in the Park with George' is a musical about the famous French Painter, Georges Seurat. The design was interactive, as the main scenic pieces where easels on wheels that the actors would constantly move about the stage. There were also flying units, which were on tracks and pivots so the actors would move and spin them throughout the show. The Director wanted to exlpore the idea of 'creating art' and the main theme I wanted to explore was George's disconnection from the people around him. Therefore, to encapsulate both these ideas, I designed easel and canvas units that had fragments of scenery on them, so that nothing came together and touched - there was always a disconnection between the pieces. On one side of these units were trees to create The Park, on the other side were pieces of George's painting 'A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte' (1884-1886). As George developed his painting more of the trees spun around and exposed fragments of his work. At the very end of Act One George completes the painting and all of these painting fragments were moved together, and here the painting touches and is complete - at the end of Act One and the end of Act Two is the only time these pieces come together. By the actors moving around the scenic pieces and bringing the painting together this idea of seeing art being created was explored.
