"Seraphina, the Messenger, bringer of birth, death, and rebirth!"
This effigy, which we named Seraphina, was built and designed by myself and Leda Farrow. It was built out of cardboard, newspaper, and cardboard paper mache. Seraphina was built for the Winter Solstice Festival in Wellington ('Lōemis') and after living in the Wellington Public Library Entrance for two weeks it was paraded to the ocean and set on fire for the Winter Solstice.
Seraphina symbolized birth, death, and rebirth - the bringer of hopes and dreams. While living in the library people were given the opportunity to write their fears (or similar) and place them in the cavity of her stomach. In the egg (designed and built by Liam Dakin) they were offered to place their hopes and dreams. On the evening of the Winter Solstice these fears were set on fire in the hope of ridding them from their owners.
