Staccus

emis Festival 2019, Wellington, New Zealand

This effigy, which we named Staccus, was designed by Leda Farrow and then built and painted by myself and Leda. Like Seraphina the year before, Staccus was built out of cardboard, newspaper, and cardboard paper mache. Staccus was built for the Winter Solstice Festival in Wellington ('Lōemis') and after living in the Wellington Massey University Campus for two weeks it was paraded to the ocean and set on fire for the Winter Solstice.

Seraphina symbolized birth, death, and rebirth - the bringer of hopes and dreams. While living at the University people were given the opportunity to write their fears (or similar) and place them in the cavity of his stomach. In the world that Staccus cradles, much like a pearl, they were offered to place their hopes and dreams. On the evening of the Winter Solstice these fears were set on fire in the hope of ridding them from their owners.

'Lōemis' is produced by Pirate & Queen Ltd.
